Have you ever wondered what lies beneath our feet? 

Andhra Pradesh ke Kurnool district mein sthit Belum Caves ek aisi jagah hai jahan jaakar aapko lagega ki aap kisi dusri duniya mein aa gaye hain. It is the second-longest cave system in the Indian subcontinent. Ye gufayen (caves) sadiyon purani hain aur inka formation dekh kar bade-bade scientists bhi hairan reh jaate hain.

​The Science of Karst Topography 🌍

How were these massive caves formed without any human help? Geography mein ise "Karst Topography" kaha jata hai. Hazaron saalon tak, zameen ke niche behti hui nadiyon ne limestone (choona patthar) ko dheere-dheere ghulaya (dissolved) hai. This chemical erosion created long tunnels and massive chambers underground. Belum Caves ka nirmaan 'Black Limestone' se hua hai, jo ise ek unique look deta hai.

​Stalactites and Stalagmites: Nature’s Chandeliers 🧪

Inside the cave, you will see strange shapes hanging from the ceiling and rising from the floor.

  • ​Stalactites: Ye wo aakritiyan hain jo chhat (ceiling) se niche ki taraf latakti hain.
  • ​Stalagmites: Ye zameen se upar ki taraf badhti hain. These are formed by the slow dripping of mineral-rich water. Jab ye dono beech mein mil jaate hain, toh ek "Pillar" (khamba) ban jata hai. Belum Caves mein ek aisi jagah hai jise 'Patalganga' kaha jata hai, jahan ek underground stream aaj bhi behti hai.

​Musical Chambers and History 🎶

Did you know that some rocks in these caves produce musical sounds when you hit them? Yahan ka 'Saptaswarala Guha' (Musical Chamber) ek aisa wonder hai jahan pattharon se sangeet nikalta hai. Historically, ye gufayen Buddhist aur Jain monks ke liye dhyan (meditation) ki jagah hua karti thin. Researchers ko yahan sadiyon purane bartan (pottery) ke avshesh (remains) bhi mile hain, jo iske aitihasik mahatva ko badhate hain.

​A Breath of Fresh Air (Deep Underground)

Even though the caves are deep, there is a constant flow of fresh air. Ise "Air Shafts" ke zariye maintain kiya gaya hai. Geography students ke liye ye gufayen ek perfect example hain ye samajhne ke liye ki underground drainage system kaise kaam karta hai. Belum Caves ki total length 3.2 km se zyada hai, lekin tourists ke liye sirf 1.5 km ka rasta khola gaya hai.
