Loktak Lake: The World's Only Floating National Park! πΆπΈ
Have you ever seen an island that moves?
Sochiye ek aisi jheel (lake) jahan zameen ke tukde paani par tair rahe hain, aur un par log ghar banakar reh rahe hain. We are talking about the magical Loktak Lake in Manipur. It is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India, but its most famous feature is the "Phumdis"—the floating islands.
The Science of "Phumdis" (Geological Detail) π
As Geography enthusiasts, we must understand what these floating islands actually are. Ye koi mitti ke dher nahi hain.
- What are Phumdis? In Geography, Phumdis are a heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil, and organic matter (dead plants) in various stages of decay.
- How do they float? Ye masses itne naram aur spongy hote hain ki ye paani ke upar tairte rehte hain. Inka sirf 20% hissa paani ke upar dikhta hai, baaki 80% paani ke niche hota hai, bilkul ek Iceberg ki tarah!
Keibul Lamjao: The Floating National Park π¦
Did you know that Loktak Lake hosts the world’s only floating national park? Iska naam hai Keibul Lamjao National Park. Ye puri tarah se ek vishal Phumdi par bana hai.
- The Dancing Deer: Ye park duniya ki sabse rare hiran ki prajati, Sangai (The Dancing Deer), ka aakhri ghar hai.
- Geography Connection: Sangai hiran in tairte hue islands par chalne ke liye hi adapt hue hain. Jab wo in naram Phumdis par chalte hain, toh wo balance banane ke liye "dance" karte hue lagte hain. It is a beautiful example of how Biogeography works!
Human Geography: Living on Water
The relationship between humans and Loktak Lake is fascinating. Yahan ke sthaniye (local) log in Phumdis par chhote-chhote ghar banate hain, jinhe 'Phumsang' kaha jata hai. Wo inhi floating islands par kheti (farming) aur machhli pakadne (fishing) ka kaam karte hain. Ye dikhata hai ki insaan kaise kisi bhi geographical condition mein khud ko dhaal leta hai.
The Environmental Threat (Chinta ka Vishay):
Unfortunately, the construction of the Ithai Barrage (dam) has disturbed the natural cycle of these Phumdis. Pehle ye Phumdis monsoon mein tairti thi aur dry season mein niche baith kar mitti se nutrients leti thi. Par ab dam ki wajah se paani ka level hamesha high rehta hai, jiski wajah se Phumdis dheere-dheere patli ho rahi hain aur toot rahi hain.
Conclusion: A Treasure We Must Protect
Loktak Lake is a geographical wonder that teaches us about the delicate balance of nature. Ye sirf Manipur ki shaan nahi hai, balki poore desh ka ek anmol ratna (jewel) hai. Comprehensive knowledge of this delicate habitat is essential if we want to secure its existence for the benefit of coming generations."
